The history of Goose Fair is as complex and mysterious as the origins of the name itself. It's an event that has changed dramatically over the centuries
The storied Goose Fair , renowned for its dazzling lights, heart-stopping rides, and the distinctive scent of mushy peas and doughnuts at the Forest Recreation Ground, has evolved significantly from its simple beginnings. Once a modest event that may have involved the trading of geesea detail shrouded in ambiguity due to scarce historical documentationthe fair's origins are mired in mystery.
Despite medieval records indicating the fairs duration, which was initially eight days, there remains a paucity of insights about the nature of the fair itself. Elaborating on the historical festivities, he shared: "This implies that Goose Fair was held on a single day and that even during the 16th century Goose Fair was just part of a larger fair, in the same way as swine fair was a part of Goose Fair by 1740. Sadly with such limited documentary evidence we actually know very little about the history of St Matthew's Fair or Goose Fair until the 18th century.
The event did earn a reputation for its cheese market, but an increase in price by 33 per cent in 1764 sparked a riot that even saw the Mayor floored by a tumbling 100lb cheese. The continuous expansion of Goose Fair meant it was destined to become a national treasure. However, construction of the Council House necessitated moving it from Slab Square, causing public uproar.
