Vaughan Williams earned many extra-curricular brownie points. He collected folk songs, conducted amateur choirs, drove ambulances in the, and in the Second World War supported German refugees and held daily concerts at the National Gallery during the Blitz. He was also a leading figure in the Society for the Promotion of New Music.
