Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd announced a number of measures designed to tackle the backlog in the Assembly last week
Northern Ireland's current MOT regime is still in an “unacceptable state” despite efforts by Stormont to address the testing backlog, which has seen motorists here face an average wait of 72 days for a test.
The chief executive of the Driver and Vehicle Agency Jeremy Logan recently said that a 72-day wait for a test is the new normal. Earlier this month it emerged that small hairline cracks have been found at 16 lifts at MOT test centres across Northern Ireland. The Driver and Vehicle Agency has said all lifts remain in service and MOT appointments have not been affected.
In response NFDA chief executive Sue Robinson said: “As much as these backlogs have been exacerbated by the Covid pandemic and the discovery of hairline cracks in hydraulic equipment, the MOT regime is still in an unacceptable state. “Road safety is of paramount importance and is a key concern for our members whilst this issue persists. Tragically, 2023 saw the highest annual number of deaths on Northern Ireland’s roads for eight years.
In 2022/2023, the DVA conducted more than 1.5 million vehicle tests, the highest number ever recorded in a year, by offering appointments around the week and on bank holidays.
