A new survey has found over half of NI motorists driving on roads past their MOT date due to booking issues

Over half of motorists in Northern Ireland have admitted driving on the roads past their MOT due date as a result of booking issues, a new survey has revealed.

But officials say the inspection frequency of the affected lifts has been increased while all the lifts remain in service and MOT appointments have not been affected. A new test centre was due to open at Hydebank in 2022 but that's now scheduled for later this year. Another new test centre at Mallusk, which was scheduled to open this year, is now planned for 2025.

For the four remaining test centres there was a four-month waiting list, with no available appointments until July. “Drivers cannot tax their vehicle without a valid MOT certificate, and without tax, car insurance may not be valid. “If drivers have any concerns, they’ll need to visit local repair garages for safety checks and ensure the vehicle has regular servicing, unfortunately this is an extra cost that 39% say they are now having to pay, in lieu of a valid MOT.”
