Linda McVean and Maureen Thomson sons both died while living in 'hellhole' homeless accommodation in Glasgow leading them to demand a change to the conditions faced by rough sleepers.
The mums of two men who died at Glasgow homeless hostels have demanded support to stop similar deaths.
Linda, whose son Frankie, 30, died in May at the Queens Park Hotel, said: “I still haven’t been able to properly grieve for my son because all I can think of is how exposed he was to danger. Linda became close to Maureen Thomson after her son Gary, 45, also died of a suspected drug overdose at the Tartan Lodge hostel in the city’s east end in June. Both mums met with First Minister Humza Yousaf to appeal for more support.Sean Clerkin, of the of STO, said: “The scale of the deaths and harms caused by the shortage of decent homes equates to institutional violence.
“Humza Yousaf has said he will consider the appeal and he really does need to up his own performance on housing.” Figures for 2022-23 published earlier this year show Scotland had 15,039 households in temporary accommodation - which can include hostels, hotels and bed and breakfasts - with this including 9,595 children.The report from ministers made clear there are “far too many households in temporary accommodation”, adding that “in the year ahead, our primary focus is on reducing that number”.
