Linda McVean and Maureen Thomson hope that talking over their own family tragedy can jolt politicians into action
Linda McVean and Maureen Thomson were enraged at the conditions their sons endured after becoming homeless.The mums joined protesters at Glasgow’s George Square while councillors debated a growing housing crisis in the nearby City Chambers.
“What I want is an assurance that any hotel that is taken over for the homeless is suitably equipped to treat their needs, whether it’s addiction or mental health related.The event, organised by the Scottish tenants Associations and Homeless Project Scotland, featured body bags to symbolise 26 deaths at homeless hotels in Glasgow in recent 12 months.
“We have estimated that at least £26 million is needed to provide a basic function in Glasgow, in terms of getting a roof over the heads of homeless people - both the indigenous people and asylum seekers. In an annual report covering work done to tackle the problem, they said they are “disappointed that the number of children in temporary accommodation has risen since last year”.
