Merseyrail services could go as far as Greater Manchester
The mayors of Manchester and Liverpool have pledged to improve rail travel between the two cities with the creation of a new public-private Liverpool-Manchester Railway Board.
In a letter to Mr Rotheram and councillor Liam Robinson, the leader of Liverpool Council, Huw Merriman MP, the transport minister, confirmed unpalatable options would no longer be considered, opening up the possibility of improved infrastructure to increase capacity, reports The Echo. As a result, Mr Rotheram and Mr Burnham said they want to convene partners after the elections to begin work, should they be elected again for Labour on May 2.
Mr Burnham added: “The first railway line in the world was created here 200 years ago and we can now bring one forward 200 years later, actually that can have high ambitions as well, because the Government has finally listened and they’ve opened the possibility of a line up between the two cities.” “We would want something meaningful happening on the ground in time for the 200th anniversary in five years’ time. We’ve convened major stakeholders along the line, who all have an interest in a high ambition in the infrastructure.
