Craig Hookham fleeced his victims out of thousands flogging tickets for Adele, Justin Timberlake concerts that did not exist
A former employee of Manchester City, Sale Sharks and Salford Red Devils set up a fake ticket sales scam to fleece gig-goers and football fans out of more than £170, 000.
From October 1, 2018, to August 29, 2020, Hookham made £123,380 selling tickets to fake sport events. From October 29, 2018 to June 13, 2020, he made a further £49,450 by selling tickets to fictitious music events - bringing the total amount he made to £172,830. Mr Ross said one of Hookham’s victims was a CEO who believed the tickets were genuine as he had previously bought rugby tickets from him whilst he was at Sale Sharks. In total he paid £5,920 directly to Hookham’s personal account which was used for all but one of the fraudulent transactions.
In October 2019 several victims began to contact Hookham as the concerts scheduled for November and December were approaching. The first scheduled concert was Adele on January,18 2020. The day before the fake concert Hookham told his victims that Adele had cancelled the concert due to an injury and said he was waiting for the organisers to arrange the refunds.
Football matches were also suspended but Hookham told his victims he was dealing with the Premiership directly and in August 2020 one victim sent him £30,000 for tickets. Defending Hookham, Rachel Faux said his fraudulent activity was ‘anything but sophisticated’ as he used his own bank account and it was ‘inevitable’ that the fraud would be detected. She said Hookham has expressed ‘disgust at his own behaviour’, his remorse was ‘genuine’ and that the offence was ‘out of character’ for him.
