Craig Hookham was ‘only interested in feathering his own nest’.
A scammer stole thousands of pounds from parents and junior football teams with fake Liverpool FC tickets.
Nick Ross, prosecuting, told the court that the 39-year-old sold the fraudulent tickets over the course of around two years. He said the Covid-pandemic and lockdowns ‘played into his hands’ by allowing Hookham to use the excuse that the fake concerts had been postponed when in reality they never existed.
The ticket packages included a three course meal, champagne reception, a meet and greet with artists after the show and photo opportunities with the artists. They were to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester and scheduled for late 2019 and 2020. Another victim that fell into Hookham’s trap bought tickets for an Adele concert scheduled for January 2020 and a Foo Fighters concert in 2020 at a cost of £2,025. They then purchased further tickets for the Eagles and Elton John gigs and later agreed to advertise the events for Hookham on social media believing the tickets were genuine.
In March 2020 the Covid pandemic hit and Hookham told those who had bought concert tickets that all concerts had been rearranged for 2021 and that refunds could not be issued as the concerts were rearranged and not cancelled. Football matches were also suspended but Hookham told his victims he was dealing with the Premier League directly and in August 2020 one victim sent him £30,000 for tickets. The victim then discovered several email addresses given to him by Hookham did not exist.
