Dr. Lara Ramdin, Chief Innovation Officer of Dole Sunshine Foods, said that thinking about redesigning the food system and packaging fruits and vegetables can help address both food insecurity and climate change. ”

As the CIO of Dole Sunshine Foods, Ramdin is working to expand their portfolio of products, while also reducing their environmental impact of their manufacturing process and packaging. She brings to this challenge 20+ years of experience innovating in completely different industries: beer at Molson Coors, fragrances and cosmetics at Estee Lauder, and consumer packaged goods at Unilever.

“Because I can ask a question from a position of naivety,” even if her colleagues question it she said, “because I think just asking the question sometimes leads you down different paths that you haven't thought about.

She described her design thinking approach as different from other organizations this way: “I think also a lot of organizations are set up to think linearly and innovation is never linear…But we don't, because actually what I'm doing is I'm constantly iterating and I'm pivoting, because I've got new information and I'm going back to my problem.

One way she said they are working towards these goals related to reducing food waste and net zero packaging is to use strategic partners who can do things they cannot, and tapping expertise from the Upcycle Food Association, of which she is a member., which is a ”non-biodegradeable leather alternative made from cellulose fibres extracted from pineapple leaves, PLA , and petroleum-based resin.
