Police say the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
National Highways said the A52 was closed in both directions between the A46 in Saxondale and the A1 in Grantham, due to the incident.
Police said the A52 Bingham bypass, between Grantham Road and Tithby Road, would remain shut "for some time".The IOPC has been asked to comment.
