The kickoff to the 46th edition of the festival was extra special. Not only was it the first in-person screening after 2 years online, it was also the first opening night at Playhouse Square since the festival decided to move there from Tower City in 2019.

There’s a glitzy movie premiere with the director and stars of the movie in attendance followed by a big fancy party.
“People are just so enthusiastic. I think there’s pent-up demand after these two years that we went virtual and it’s so great to see so many friendly faces,” said Shepherd, who added he was “very happy” with the opening night attendance and advanced ticket sales to the festival’s remaining 283 screenings over the next 10 days.It was a reunion for “Peace by Chocolate” director Jonathan Keijser as well. His documentary “What Would Beethoven Do?” won the music movie competition at CIFF40 in 2016.
“I’m excited to be able to share it with so many people the way we should be seeing films together,” the director said. “Telling stories and sharing stories is a communal experience. It’s one in which we can all laugh together, we can all cry together, we can all experience something.” Talking about what inspired him to make the movie, the director said it is the job of filmmakers to tell stories that provide a perspective you can’t get in your own community.
