The Woodlands is getting a Texas-sized public artwork. Upon completion, the piece “Flowers” (2022) will become one of the largest hand-painted murals of its kind in the state at 35,000-square feet.

Workers paint flowers using several lifts along a 35,000-square-foot mural at The Woodlands Waterway, Tuesday, March 29, 2022, in The Woodlands. Since late last week, a fourteen-person crew has worked to transform the south wall of the Waterway Square garage into the art piece reaching 105 feet all and 358 feet wide, which will anchor the new 2.3-acre outdoor community gathering space. The mural will be unveiled during The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, which begins April 9.

Howard Hughes Corporation commissioned contemporary artist Alex Katz to create a 35,000-square foot mural in Waterway Square to anchor a new, 2.3-acre outdoor community gathering space. Upon completion, the piece, “Flowers” , becomes one of the largest hand-painted murals of its kind in the state. It will span a 358 x 105-foot wall on the south side of the Woodlands Waterway Square garage.

“We are driven by the accessibility of public art, its ability to help shape a community’s identity, and its powerful role in the placemaking process—and we think an Alex Katz artwork is an outstanding contribution to The Woodlands’ community,” said Jay Cross, president of The Howard Hughes Corporation, via statement. “This wall of flowers creates an uplifting, inviting environment that expands the open space in front into a lush and inviting community gathering place.

The mural’s unveiling is timed to coincide with the Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival April 9-10. “Flowers” is the most recent addition to Howard Hughes Arts, an initiative founded to celebrate the essential role that accessible public art and culture play in building strong communities. At age 94, Katz has spent the past seven decades amassing an impressive body of work which includes paintings, drawing, sculpture and prints. He recently installed a collection of 19 large-scale works on glass for the New York subway; his work has been featured in more than 200 solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and more.
