The Keihan Group’s flagship hotel, THE THOUSAND KYOTO , starts accepting bookings today for our new program starting on Apr10, – making your own Ban-gasa umbrella at Hiyoshiya, a Kyo-wagasa umbrella shop established in the late Edo period – for OKUTRIP KYOTO, an exclusive program inviting hotel guests into the depths of Kyoto.
Hiyoshiya is the only workshop in Kyoto that has inherited the Kyo-wagasa technique passed down through five generations for over 160 years. Hiyoshiya makes and restores traditional nodate outdoor umbrellas used by tea ceremony masters, as well as various Japanese umbrellas used in traditional performing arts stages such as Noh and Kabuki, as well as traditional events at temples and shrines.
