This startup helps early-stage forestry projects get funded. Check out the 14-slide pitch deck carbon credit marketplace Xilva used to raise $2 million.

Xilva has come up with a proprietary way of evaluating forestry projects and associated risks, which it says will bring trust back into the market. It has screened and certified over 40 projects looking at potential environmental and social impact, corruption, and the reputation of the project developer. It matches projects with corporates based on their desired impact, location, and risk profile.

It takes time to understand what's happening on the ground, how people are treated, and how biodiversity is taken into account, he added. When a corporate decides it wants to back a project, Xilva dives into deeper due diligence and looks at its robustness, permanence, biodiversity, impact on local people, and so on, to provide a detailed grading of the project. Corporates and project developers are also put in touch with one another for further transparency.

Xilva draws on data from multiple sources including NGO Global Forest Watch, which offers global forestry monitoring tools, to help evaluate projects. It visits projects directly in some cases. The startup makes money by taking a slice of each deal.
