The statistics measured the numbers passing away in the four months between December and March compared to the other months of the year.
The number of winter deaths in Stirling reached their highest level in 2022/23 in more than 13 years according to new statistics.
In that four month period for 22/23, there were 399 ‘winter deaths’ reported, compared to 340 in August to November and 310 from April to June. It means an increase of 70 when the two other periods of the year are averaged together, which is the second highest toll behind 20/21.Stirling is reflective of the broader picture in the data across Scotland, with the 24,427 winter deaths in 22/23 11 per cent higher than last winter and the highest toll in 30 years.
However, cold weather itself, including hypothermia, was directly attributed as a cause in very few cases - with fewer than ten cases every year since 2019 from ‘exposure to extreme natural cold’.
