A new map highlights the areas of Greater Manchester that have seen suspected cases of whooping cough - after it was revealed five babies had died as infections of the “100 day cough” continue to spread.
Manchester has seen the most cases with 45, followed by Oldham, with 25, and then Trafford and Bolton, with 23 cases each. But GPs have diagnosed suspected cases in every council area of Greater Manchester.Cases have been rising in England due to a “combination” of factors, including the cyclical nature of the disease and the impact and isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic which led to reduced immunity in the population. Vaccine uptake has also fallen in recent years.
Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, consultant epidemiologist for the UKHSA, said: “Vaccination remains the best defence against whooping cough and it is vital that pregnant women and young infants receive their vaccines at the right time. Four in 10 expectant mothers do not take the maternal pertussis vaccination, while about one in 12 infants do not receive the six-in-one jab by their first birthday.
