With cases of whooping cough or the 100-day cough on the rise, parents are being warned to be cautious and know the symptoms to look out for

Parents across the UK have been urged to look out for the symptoms of whooping cough in their children, as five babies have died of the bacterial infection so far this year. Almost 3,000 cases of whooping cough, sometimes known as the 100-day cough, have been recorded in 2024 so far – triple the numbers seen in 2023.Health experts have now urged parents to watch out for these key symptoms – which include a distinctive sound and mucus.

Dr Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, added: ‘Whooping cough can have a very long infectious period of around two to three weeks — the period of time when an infected individual is able to transmit the bacteria onto others. Babies under the age of six months may need hospitalisation due to the risks of brain swelling and convulsions.‘Babies under 6 months old with whooping cough have an increased chance of having problems such as:The illness is less severe in older children, teenagers and adults, but serious cases of whooping cough can lead to pneumonia, fainting and even rib fractures due to the intensity of the coughing fits.

However, if a person has had the infection for a while, then antibiotics may not help speed up the recovery process and you’ll no longer be infectious. Can whooping cough be prevented? The most effective form of treatment against whooping cough is to get vaccinated. What’s behind the alarming rise in cases? A number of reasons are thought to have caused the sudden uptick in cases, including a decline in vaccinations among pregnant women.
