Accompanying a new quarterback is a revamped defensive line, an improved offensive line and a logjam at wide receiver.

Houston Texans top draft selections, outside linebacker Will Anderson, Jr., from Alabama, left, and quarterback C.J. Stroud, of Ohio State, are both being counted on for immediate contributions. All offseason, the message coming from the Texans’ coaching staff and front office was that they were trying to build a team.

Quarterback, defensive end, center and wide receiver were the biggest needs heading into the NFL draft. And while it was uncertain whether the Texans could address all four, they did just that within the first three rounds. Center Juice Scruggs, whom the Texans traded up to pick in the second round, is expected to compete for a starting role. And the University of Houston's Tank Dell, whom the Texans took in the third round and who led college football in receiving last season, should be a significant contributor for a team that needed wide receiver and special teams help.

But he was one of the most talented players in the draft, and the Texans took him No. 2 overall because he’s their future. The Texans are building their offense around Stroud, not Mills or Keenum. So the expectation is he’ll start Week 1. It’s up to his coaching staff to get him prepared.
