Dogs get frightened over Halloween and Bonfire Night as much as humans do
With Halloween here pets are likely to be getting the creeps just as much as humans. New research conducted by pet insurance brand, ManyPets, has now revealed that nearly half of pet owners believe their pets can sense supernatural occurrences. What’s more, 96% of pet owners claimed that they know when their pet is scared; citing fireworks , loud noises and the vacuum cleaner as the biggest scare-mongers for our furry friends.
ManyPets’ resident veterinarian, Dr Kirsten Ronngren has lifted the lid on what is creeping out our pets and how pet parents can send the spooks away….Fireworks are typically a noise phobia for pets, as they don’t understand where the sound is coming from and that it’s not a potential threat. Create a safe and calm space for your pet, put down blankets and a crate so that they can make themselves a small den to feel as safe as possible. Remember to remain calm yourself, and only reward positive calm behaviours.Most dogs that I see with an aversion to the vacuum cleaner show signs of avoidance behaviour, not directed aggression. They typically will hide in other rooms or cower on the outside of the room that is being vacuumed.
Dogs are more sensitive to loud noises than people because their hearing is more developed than ours and they can’t conceptualise that the loud noise is not associated with a danger or threat like we can. Thunder in particular can seem threatening since they don’t know what it is or where it’s coming from.

American XL Bullies to be Banned in England and WalesThe government has confirmed that American XL bullies will be added to the list of banned dogs from December 31, 2023. The new rules will make it illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL bully dogs to stray. Owners will also be required to muzzle the dogs. The rules are similar to those issued for the four breeds banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
