Using the wrong kind of fuel for your fire could breach the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) 1990
As November 5 fast approaches, households across the UK will be preparing to host a bonfire. When choosing kindling for a bonfire, it's essential to prioritise safety and consideration for the environment.
Technically speaking, there is no UK law in place which bans bonfires, but your bonfire could fall within the definition of a state nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 if it interferes substantially with somebody else's well-being. If smoke from your bonfire is allowed to drift across a neighbouring road or train track, you could be fined up to £5000. Bonfire and kindling expert Dan McCarthy explains on behalf of Green Olive Firewood exactly how revellers can avoid being fined - and it's as simple as using the right kind of kindling.“If you’re looking to avoid large amounts of smoke, dry wood is an excellent choice, as a lack of excess moisture results in highly efficient combustion and reduced smoke.
