Workers who returned to restaurants, dentist offices and retail stores helped boost the employment figures. But the unemployment rate among black workers increased.
What improved in the jobs report from April to May?
The number of people in nonagricultural industries who said they were working part-time due to an inability to find full-time work declined 2.3% to 10.5 million.The food manufacturing industry added 24,900 jobs for a total of 1.58 million, up 1.6%.The health care sector added 312,400 jobs, up 2.1% to 14.9 million despite hospitals dropping 26,700 jobs to 5.1 million. Many of the gains came from dentist offices, which added 244,800 jobs, increasing 56.3% to 679.
Private-sector employees worked an average of an extra half an hour per week in May than in April for a total of 34.7 hours. That was also up from May 2019, when it was 34.4 hours.The unemployment rate among black workers rose from 16.7% to 16.8%. Most of the job losses for black workers appear to have affected black teenagers, whose jobless rate rose from 28% to 34.9%.
The number of Americans working part time in nonagricultural industries for"noneconomic reasons" – which includes"childcare problems, family or personal obligations, school or training" – rose 17% to 14 million.
