A new study shows weight-loss surgery could significantly reduce the risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer or death from liver disease as well as heart attacks and strokes via WSJ
Bariatric surgery may help the growing share of the global population that is obese to avoid dangerous complications of a condition known as fatty-liver disease, according to a new study.
“This was a very well-done study,” said Manal Abdelmalek, a hepatologist and director of a nonalcoholic fatty-liver disease clinical research program at Duke University who wasn’t involved in the research. Dr. Abdelmalek said she counsels patients who qualify for bariatric surgery about potential health benefits beyond weight loss. People with moderate scarring of the liver are at increased risk of developing cirrhosis, she said.
. It also can occur in people of normal body weight who have other metabolic risk factors, the study said. The study was observational, meaning that it showed an association rather than cause and effect. It involved 1,158 patients at the Cleveland Clinic with obesity who had liver biopsies between 2004 and 2016 showing that they had mild to severe scarring of their livers.
