Let's talk about it.
. Every day, members of the LGBTQ community actively engage in acts of exclusivity while simultaneously grandstanding about how everyone is already and should feel included. It’s hypocrisy.
It’s a privilege to resort to sanctimonious hand-wringing about how “there are better ways to help POC,” just like it is to tell people of color that their chosen methods to bring about awareness and liberate themselves will not work without having lived that experience. Those who believe that the flag’s new stripes “won’t fix the race problem in the gay community” sound exactly like the peoplethat kneeling during the national anthem “won’t fix” police brutality.
If people around you are so up in arms about the inclusion of LGBTQ people of color in this moment, ask yourself why they otherwise co-opt their culture as their own. If they quote RuPaul or use slang that has roots to black and brown queer spaces in any capacity, they are cherry-picking a culture that isn’t theirs to use, and one they are making painstakingly clear they don’t care to support.
Then ask, why it is that the idea of including and showing solidarity with a group of people in a community is such a problem?after the election to show black, brown, and Muslim people they weren't one of the "bad white people.
