'When an artist uses Black culture for their financial gain, is it not their duty to advocate against Black suffering?' —SampaTasha

It’s a complex issue, and it’s important to remember that Black fans have a variety of opinions about how K-pop idols should show support for Black Lives Matter; Black fans are not one block of identical opinions, but rather a group of varied and valid voices. There are those who are not bothered whether Korean musicians contribute to the conversation on police brutality.

However, the events of the past week show that the K-pop community needs to evaluate how they treat Black fans. It is not the place for non-Black people to tell Black fans how they should feel in matters regarding race. Nor is it appropriate to accept apologies that were not directed to your community. Black K-pop fans deserve a place at the table that their community helped build., who were speaking about the lives of Black and Brown people.
