Tens of thousands of home across the UK contain high levels of radon, with the gas potentially dangerous for many.

The vast majority of people have never heard of radon, but the naturally occurring radioactive gas can pose a risk to homes across the country.

Despite so little being oblivious to the gas, tens of thousands of UK homes are impacted by high radon levels, according to a Government report published in 2016. In the 36 years between 1980 and 2016, just 3 per cent of all homes in the UK had been tested for the gas. However, 69,500 of these property were found to have radon levels equal to or above the current action level of 00 becquerels per cubic metre .

Chief Medical Officer for England, Dr Chris Witty, said: “Most people don’t even know what it is. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness about radon and encourage people to test their homes.” Maria Dugdale, Chairman at www.radonassociation.co.uk said: “Radon gas is a silent killer; it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for over 1,000 lung cancer deaths in the UK each year, and yet most people don't even know what it is. It’s shocking that only one in ten people had heard of the gas, and even more shocking, in my opinion, that most of those we questioned were not concerned about its presence in their homes.
