But the investment may have paid off for Mr Prigozhin. Wagner’s progress has been rapturously received by Russian hawks and restored confidence for battles ahead.

“Prigozhin knows Putin is so disappointed in Shoigu that he is going to change him soon. Prigozhin may be planning to get the job.”
