More than two decades ago, Usha Chilukuri was a driven student in suburban San Diego, a teen who played in the marching band at Mt. Carmel High School and competed in the school’s Jeopardy-style trivia club.
Her upbringing in the community of Rancho Peñasquitos was thousands of miles away, and a far cry from her husband’s challenged childhood in a small Appalachian town. “It’s hard to imagine a more powerful example of the American dream,” she said in her speech. “A boy from Middletown, Ohio, raised by his grandmother through tough times, chosen to lead our country through some of its greatest challenges.”
Both of Usha’s parents hold prominent positions in San Diego’s academic world. Her mother, Lakshmi Chilukuri, is provost of Sixth College at UC San Diego and a professor of biology. Her father, Krish Chilukuri, is an aerospace engineer and a lecturer at San Diego State University.as a “bookworm.” The 2004 graduate played the flute in the school marching band and had a competitive streak.
Usha wouldn’t meet her husband until both became Yale Law School students. She said during her convention speech that the two started as friends. “That JD and I could meet at all, let alone fall in love and marry, is a testament to this great country,” she said.“She seemed some sort of genetic anomaly, a combination of every positive quality a human being should have: bright, hardworking, tall, and beautiful,” he wrote in his memoir.
