When she introduced her husband at the republican National Convention on Wednesday night, Chilukuri Vance talked of the stark difference between how she and her husband grew up — she a middle-class immigrant from San Diego, and he from a low-income Appalachian family. She called him “a meat and potatoes kind of guy” who respected her vegetarian diet and learned to cook Indian food for her mother.
She received an undergraduate degree at Yale University and a master of philosophy at the University of Cambridge through the Gates Cambridge scholarship.The family is originally from a village called Vadduru in Andhra Pradesh state but moved to Chennai when Usha Vance’s paternal grandfather, Ramasastry Chilukuri, went to teach at the IIT there around the time it was set up in 1959, members of the family told Reuters., J.D.
