LIMF Academy has offered emerging musicians free rehearsals and the chance to perform during Eurovision
Koj, 25, from Wavertree, is an urban artist specialising in hip hop, rap and grime. He had been working tirelessly to make a success out of his music, but was growing frustrated about how many opportunities for jobs and networking were based outside of his home city.
LIMF Academy is an initiative part of the Liverpool International Music Festival. Working with Liverpool City Council and other organisations, it provides education and work opportunities for artists and bands aged between 15 and 25. “And so I guess having someone like LIMF come in and kind of help you along your journey and say, look, I'm going to do a bit of this journey with you and help give you tools and put you in front of the right people, is really validating for your journey.
Ni said: “I think that's such an empowering thing to offer like emerging artists because otherwise we would have no idea how we could one day make money. Obviously if it's your job and you put your heart and soul into it, you need, it needs to be something that eventually pays you.” Speaking about how LIMF was created, Yaw, 40, from Sefton, said: "I was born and raised in Liverpool, fell into the music industry coming out of uni, didn't really know anything about the music industry. That was 2004.
“So I said, what about us doing something like an academy essentially, which wouldn't be bricks and mortar school of music, for instance. It would be more of an initiative that would be about intervention and kind of going, okay, you got music artists at this level, locally doing the thing, how do we take them to a national level, with not just money per se, but like connecting them with industry.
