Following the incident, De Blasio blamed the protesters for instigating the incident, telling a late-night press conference of the “upsetting” clip: “I’m not gonna blame officers who are trying to deal with an absolutely impossible situation." He added: “The folks who were converging on that police car did the wrong thing to begin with and they created an untenable situation.”The Congresswoman urged De Blasio to “de-escalate” the situation, tweeting: “As mayor, this police department is under your leadership."

She added: “This moment demands leadership & accountability from each of us. Defending and making excuses for NYPD running SUVs into crowds was wrong.”The congresswoman tweeted: “Running SUVs in crowds of people should never, ever be normalized. No matter who does it, no matter why.

Protests across the U.S. continued into a sixth day on Sunday as states and cities, including Minneapolis where Floyd died on Monday, called in the National Guard. Some 25 cities have imposed curfews amid escalating clashes between police and protesters.
