UH coach Dana Holgorsen said his defense must improve immediately after Saturday's disaster against SMU but defended their effort.

UH suffered through one of the worst defensive showings in school history, allowing the Mustangs to score touchdowns on nine straight drives to begin the game and 11 of 12 overall in the 77-63 loss.The 140 points marked the highest-scoring regulation game in FBS history. UH’s 63 points matched the most in regulation for a losing team in FBS history.“Our guys competed,” he said. “If I was looking at a defense that loafed and was not playing with effort and not competing, we’d have a real problem.
Holgorsen said some of the problems involved technique, “uncharacteristic mistakes” by regular starters and a lineup that includes several new players due to injuries. UH had 16 missed tackles in the game, the second-most this season behind the UTSA opener , according to Pro Football Focus.Temple is coming off its best game of the season, setting season highs for points and total offense in a blowout win over South Florida.
“We’re better with him out there,” coach Dana Holgorsen said. “That touchdown was pretty awesome. We haven’t had a guy be able to go get it like that, catch it over the shoulder like that, in a while. Good to have him back.”
