Senior Jake Selstad angry about NCAA policy barring postseason eligibility during Tritons' transition period to Div. I

finished his collegiate track career last weekend at a meet at Azusa Pacific, winning the 800 meters in 1:48.69 and lowering UC San Diego’s school record for the third time in a month and fourth time this season.

“All I have ever wanted to do was race,” Selstad wrote. “I put my heart and soul into my sport, had jack for scholarship, and didn’t expect anything in return. I was there to run for my coach, my family and my best friends I made WHILE RUNNING. I have bled for this sport, cried, been broken and all the NCAA AND BIG WEST CONFERENCE DOES IS TAKE AWAY MY OPPORTUNITY. BIG .”

The four-year transition also theoretically gives athletic departments ample time to ramp up scholarships, staffing, infrastructure and competitive levels to Div. I standards without the immediate pressure of justifying the move to Div. I by qualifying for NCAA championships or the fear of dropping back to Div. II.

That’s because the regular-season conference champion gets an automatic spot in the men’s NIT, which is owned and operated by the NCAA, and the Big West would lose that berth if the Tritons finished first while transitioning. The same doesn’t apply to the women because the NCAA doesn’t own the women’s NIT, which can invite anyone it wants.
