Defense attorneys for Jonathan Paul Jones, accused in the head-on crash on a highway exit ramp that killed a UTSA graduate in 2020, also offered an expert who said the victim didn't react fast enough to avoid being hit.

Bexar County jurors in the intoxication manslaughter trial of a former federal officer have heard days of conflicting testimony over a blood draw that measured his alcohol level at twice the legal limit and whether the victim, hit by the officer's truck going the wrong way, could have saved herself.

Prosecutors Jordan Brown and Oscar Salinas rested their case Wednesday afternoon. Defense attorneys John Flanary and Mark Thiessen then presented a series of expert witnesses, including Jahan Eftekhar, a mechanical engineer who consults on crash reconstructions and who said Thursday his analysis showed McCowan did not react fast enough to prevent being hit by Jones.

A prosecution witness, toxicology expert Janine DeKing, had told the jury that Jones' blood-alcohol content was .177. The legal limit for drivers in Texas is .08.
