The Foreign Affairs Committee has called for reform following the reluctance of the UK Government to call on India to release Jagtar Singh Johal.

The Tory Government has been slammed by the Foreign Affairs Committee for its repeated failures to secure the release of detained Scot Jagtar Singh Johal despite allegations of torture.

Jagtar, from Dumbarton, was in Northern India for his wedding in 2017 when he was locked up and accused of being involved in a political murder plot. The Government has been told it must reform by responding assertively to any states mistreating UK citizens or who refuse consular access and international law should be perused for authorities using it as leverage to obtain silence.

It comes after Rishi Sunak said he raised Jagtar's case with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit earlier this month as Britain seeks to make a trade deal with India. Sunak came under huge criticism after he refused to commit to lobbying for Jagtar's “immediately release” despite letters from 70 MPs.

The committee's report follows recent findings from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman that said the FCOD was guilty of "maladministration" in the case of another detained citizen, Matthew Hedges. The Government has now committed to carry out a review of all cases of the torture of British nationals subject to detention overseas.
