The NHS is facing an exodus of exhausted junior doctors 🗣️ theipaper has spoken to some of them, preparing to vote on industrial action and potential strikes in a in ballot that opens next month, who say they are considering their whole future in th...

Mr Kay said better pay was needed. “It’s one thing politicians saying you support the NHS by banging pans outside Downing Street, but that doesn’t quite cut it,” he said.

“It’s no surprise that we are burning out, leaving to work abroad or quitting medicine altogether, which will only make staffing shortages worse. “Alongside a multi-year pay deal, we have invested an additional £90m to provide the most experienced junior doctors with higher pay, increased allowances for those working the most frequently at weekends, and increased rates of pay for night shifts.

“I’m on £14 an hour, which, as a doctor who’s trained for six years, is pretty shit as a starting salary,” Sara said. “But it’s not just the money. I would very happily earn what I’m earning now, if the work-life balance was better. I just don’t see it being sustainable.” “It happens a lot nowadays when I wake up or I’m in the shower. I’m like, ‘Oh, it would be nice to just have a normal job’,” she says.to practise medicine for a “better lifestyle”.

Many are detained under the mental health act, meaning they can be granted escorted leave by the consultant to get fresh air or buy their essentials in the shops. However, this can only happen if there are enough nurses on shift to escort them out. “It’s really disheartening, when you’ve worked so hard through medical school for so many years, to get to this point. It does make you feel undervalued.”

“If you’re doing extreme hours, it’s hard to be on your top game every day. When you’ve worked 67 hours in a week already, it’s hard to be focused and be as efficient as you were, and still be the most compassionate, empathetic doctor.”“It’s such a shame,” she says. “I wish I could say yes because we all believe in it so much.
