West Yorkshire NHS hospitals are in crisis - and almost at breaking point
A crisis is brewing across hospitals in West Yorkshire, with accident and emergency departments overcrowded and "all but the most urgent" surgeries being cancelled.
A&E departments are "seeing high volumes of attendances resulting in over-crowding, long waits to be seen and delays for people requiring admission". As a result, the NHS West Yorkshire ICB has asked GPs to "prioritise urgent and same day needs", and "step down routine and non-urgent activity to facilitate this".
"The increase in the number of people seeking help is alongside the challenges of a difficult winter and supporting people who are well enough to leave hospital for care in the community or returning home, which is where most people want to be. All colleagues are working exceptionally hard to manage the increase in demand following the festive period."The NHS West Yorkshire ICB confirmed GPs in West Yorkshire will be prioritising urgent and same day care.
