Soaring cases of highly infectious whooping cough cause UK death of baby as doctor issues warning about vaccine uptake
Whooping cough sounds like the kind of illness that belongs in the Victorian era along with scabies and typhoid. But following the death of a baby in the UK, a doctor has issued a warning about the number of cases of the highly contagious disease being seen in hospitals. And parents are being asked to check the vaccination status of their children.
Cases of the potentially life-threatening bacterial virus have risen substantially in recent months. According to the UK Health Security Agency , 553 cases were confirmed in England alone in January, compared with 858 cases for the whole of last year .
The whooping cough vaccine given in pregnancy, works when the antibodies pass from a pregnant woman to the baby in the womb. It is 97% effective at preventing death in babies. But by 2023, only 58% of mums-to-be were having the jab according to the UKHSA. The agency is now urging more pregnant women to come forward and is also asking parents to check the immunisation status of their children.
