their road toward a potential NHL roster spot will begin this weekend, when Dallas participates in the Traverse City Prospect Tournament.and Mavrik Bourque form the nucleus of the next wave of talent in the Stars organization, a youth movement that could debut in the NHL this season. All three players led their respective Canadian junior leagues in points per game last season, and will battle for roster spots next week when main training camp opens in Cedar Park.
Johnston , Stankoven and Bourque are the headliners of a group that also features a number of intriguing players. On defense, it’s a lot of new faces. Artem Grushnikov is a defenseman with upside. Christian Kyrou and Gavin White both figure to get power-play looks, according to Neil Graham. Graham is the head coach of AHL affiliate Texas, and will coach the prospects in Traverse City.
Johnston is generally regarded as the team’s best prospect — though Bourque’s Memorial Cup run and Stankoven’s World Juniors meant they had better summers than Johnston. He led the OHL with 124 points in 68 games, and he was named the league MVP. Graham said he’d want to pair Johnston with someone who can finish and distribute the puck to create give-and-go opportunities.
