Having spent the past six months on the road, Charles Hendy could be forgiven for sounding a little weary about the prospect of The Mary Wallopers’ second trek around the UK this year. But not a bit of it.
'I think we're addicted to touring,' says the 29-year-old singer and guitarist who formed the Irish folk-punk band with his brother Andrew and friend Sean McKenna in Dundalk seven years ago. 'We did so much in the festivals over the summer, it was non-stop and you didn't really get the same buzz off it, and also the travel is so mismatched, but I'm really looking forward . I love being on the road, especially playing venues that are booked for our gigs particularly.
'It's actually where The Corrs started playing music, they used to work in the pub. 'We used to start playing music by going around asking for free drink and it worked until people started giving us money. They probably realised that it was cheaper to just give us the money than give us the free drink, we'd bankrupt the pubs. 'So Macmanus' gave us our first gig, they gave us 250 euros to play on St Patrick's Day and we played for nine hours with no amplification.
