The floating PLTS above the Cirata Reservoir is a collaboration between PLN and an energy company from the United Arab Emirates, Masdar. Occupying an area of 200 hectares, the PLTS has a capacity of 192 megawatt-peak (MWp).
PLN Zainal Arifin, in Jakarta, Tuesday , said, although the PLTS installation capacity is 192 MWp, the average capacity is 145 MWp . This, among other things, takes into account network losses and other factors. According to the plan, the inauguration will take place on October 27 2023.
Zainal stated that once it is inaugurated, electricity will directly enter the system through the Cirata Main Substation. The advantage of the floating solar power plant at Cirata is that it is connected to a large hydroelectric power plant there. Therefore, the effect of intermittence can be mitigated.
Zainal added that there are other solar power projects in Indonesia that are expected to operate soon, including the West Bali Solar Power Plant and East Bali Solar Power Plant which are being developed by PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk. Each of these solar power plants has a capacity of 25 MWp. According to Zainal, the operation is expected to begin within six months.
Although energy obtained for free, investment in giant solar power projects requires significant costs. Therefore, cooperation with international parties will be necessary to finance such projects.
