Daylight Saving Time (DST) is an outdated practice that plunges us into darkness at 4pm. It was originally implemented in 1916 to save energy but has since become a nuisance. The author decided to ignore the time change and stick to British Summer Time (BST) to make better use of evening light. While still acknowledging the real time for planning purposes, the author sets their phone clock to BST using an Apple widget.
‘Through the winter I keep the same hours as I do through the summer’ . Your phone will likely have updated automatically while you were sleeping, so maybe you didn’t even realise it happened… until you wonder why on earth it’s suddenly dark so soon..
This time last year, I decided to do a little experiment. When the rest of the country changed their clocks, I just carried on with BST. It’s made up anyway, so I figured why not change it to suit me better? My little trick means that when it’s 4pm in gloomy Britain and the sun sets, it’s actually 5pm for me and trust me, that one hour makes a world of difference. I’ve been stunned by the boost it’s given my mental and physical wellbeing. It does require a little mental gymnastics to make sure I’ve got the time right for meetings, but the one time I got it wrong it made me an hour early, not late, so it wasn’t a big deal.
