Davey, a search and rescue dog, has been responsible for saving lives whilst working abroad
A Lancashire search and rescue dog has been handed a special award after saving lives following this year's earthquakes in Turkey.
Unfortunately, his energetic temperament meant he wasn't well suited to being a pet, but his unique personality could be used elsewhere. The Trust decided that if he went to a pet home, he wouldn't have his physical and mental needs fulfilled, so working was the best choice.Dogs Trust reached out to dog handler Lindsay Sielski, a UK International Search and Rescue Canine Team Lead. The 39-year-old first joined LFRS in 2006 as a firefighter in Bamber Bridge, Lancaster and Preston.
"As he hadn't had his needs fulfilled if he was off the lead, he didn't want to return, and he had little obedience; he wasn't so much naughty but untrained and bored. With his needs fulfilled, his brain worked, and his physical needs catered for, he has become a great dog who lives alongside my family and also works alongside me and my other search dogs during working hours.
The Springer Spaniel found a woman while searching after an arduous nine-hour search. Then, while the team were rescuing a family trapped in rubble, Davey was tasked with searching for others and became fixated with one particular crack in a wall. Mainly, Davey works in the UK where he undertakes work with explosions and assisting the police with the location of high-risk missing people. Lindsay added: "Davey and Sidney, our other Urban Search and Rescue Search dogs, where possible, work in pairs, whether that is a high-risk missing person, a gas explosion anywhere in the UK, or a natural disaster requiring aid internationally.
The firefighter added: "The buildings were mainly made of stone, mud, and wood, and the likelihood of people being alive and trapped in saveable voids was slim. The search team worked regardless and never once gave up hope of survival as they travelled to outlying villages in the Atlas Mountains."
