Texans defensive back Tavierre Thomas could play a bigger role this week against a dangerous Giants rushing game.Just when Joe Danna thought he knew Tavierre Thomas, the Texans position coach realized he and most of the organization had been mispronouncing his nickel safety’s name. One day, Danna overheard Thomas calling his baby son, his namesake, by the nickname “Tavi.” As inand later asked Thomas why he hadn’t corrected anyone.
Thomas turned into one of Houston’s most disruptive defenders. He ranked fourth on the Texans in 2021 with 86 tackles, forced a fumble and logged two interceptions that included a 48-yard pick-six in an upset win over the Chargers. The production projected Thomas as more than just a placeholder, the sort of hidden gem Caserio’s rebuild strategy was tailored to discover.
Thomas said his time on the injured reserve “was terrible.” There he’d been, a Division II success story from Ferris State who had his best chance yet at solidifying a starting role, and he’d been resigned to rehab an unpredictable soft-tissue injury while the season continued without him. “I thought I could because some of the guys that were on IR, they were at home,” Thomas said. “But Lovie’s like, ‘No. You’re going to the game. You’re a part of this team, so you’ve got to be there.’ So, I was just there. I’m happy I could be there. I’m happy I could help… I wasn’t out there physically. But I was out there mentally.”
Nickel safeties have become valuable defenders in an era of matchup-winning hybrid offensive weapons. What used to be mostly featured within a substitution package in passing situations has effectively become part of the base defense within Smith’s scheme. King lined up as Houston’s third linebacker in a 4-3 look against the Jaguars, and his usage as a backfield blitzer and tackler is underlined by his five tackles for loss, which are tied for second on the team.
