One of the key issues in negotiations is the two-tiered wage system Kellogg's uses, with about 30 percent of the 1,400 striking workers at the lower level.

the company publicly stated its plans to begin the process of replacing striking workers.

The Battle Creek, Michigan-based cereal manufacturer has been negotiating with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union, representing the 1,400 workers from Kellogg's four plant locations across the U.S. The company said one of their offers included workers being elevated to the higher pay level after four years of experience, which the union wasn't satisfied with.

Former Kellogg's employee Austin Brown supports workers on strike during a rally outside Kellogg's World Headquarters on Oct. 27, in Battle Creek, Mich. Union representatives and Kellogg's executives are set to return to the bargaining table next week following the company's statement they would hire replacement workers for some of the 1,400 striking employees. The two sides met for one day earlier this week, but didn't make much progress.
