An initiative that would give tenants more rights and enact rental requirements for landlords is coming to ballots in Tacoma this November.
Set limits on certain rental fees; require landlords provide two notices to increase rent and offer relocation assistance when the increase is 5% or more
In September, KOMO News spoke to a family that was fighting an eviction case that supporters of the tenant bill of rights said was a reason the initiative should be approved. The family was scheduled to be evicted after they got behind on rent payments when the husband, Kevin, and wife, Cathy, were out of work for an extended period of time starting last year.
Housing advocates with Tacoma for All got involved in the case to call for a halt on the eviction and held a protest outside of their home. Initiative 1 is fiercely opposed by landlords who say it could leave Tacoma with fewer rental units if owners take the properties off the market.
