A woman was carjacked and shot in Tacoma Monday morning near an elementary school.
The Tacoma Police Department said the woman was shot in the hand and ran to the safety of Impact Commencement Bay Elementary School at 1301 East 34th Street. The school's principal told KOMO News the woman pounded on a side door and was let in through the main office. The school said she was shaken and had a significant gunshot wound to her bleeding hand.
There was a trail of blood from the middle of M Street and 32nd Street up the road and along the sidewalk to the school. The school said it called 911 for medical help and police as it went into an immediate lockdown. An email was sent to parents letting them know what happened. The principal said the woman told them she was giving two people a ride when they shot her and took her car. That has not been confirmed by police.Police said they are not releasing any suspect information at this time.
One parent of a second grader went to the school to check on her son when she learned of the incident. She spoke on camera but did not want to share her name. She said she was initially worried about her son, but overall believes the school is safe and does a good job of keeping their "scholars" safe.
"I feel just fine," the parent said. "I think the school addressed a challenging situation with a woman who was seeking some refuge and they connected her with Tacoma PD, and the woman got the care she needed. I'm glad she was able to come here and get the help she needed. This is a caring place. They care deeply about their children and we are in a neighborhood. This is about our community and looking out for one another.
