Starting May 16, the South Cushman shooting range will be closed to the public as it undergoes renovations.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Starting May 16, the South Cushman Shooting Range will be closed to the public as it undergoes renovations.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough announced the closure date on May 3, saying the project will likely continue until mid-August, when the range will reopen.Changes to the area will include new safety berms between lanes and a higher backstop at the end of the range. The area will also add parking and access paths that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“Half of the shooting area, all the shooting positions, we’ll have a roof structure over them so folks can use that in the weather and not get rained on or snowed on,” said Jim Williams, Chief of Staff with the borough. “We’ll actually have a restroom out there. It’s the first time ever, so families and stuff who are out there enjoying the range won’t have to go to the woods and use the woods.”
While the range is closed, other options for shooting in Fairbanks are expected to remain available, including the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Indoor Shooting Range and the one at the Tanana Valley Sportsmen’s Association.
