A FISHING boat sank off the North Sea coast, prompting a huge rescue operation.
The 27-metre fishing vessel activated its distress beacon at 5am, 36 nautical miles east of Shetland.
At the time, winds were northerly, Force 6-7, with an air temperature of around five degrees celsius. Max Rimington, for HM Coastguard, said: “The fishing vessel crew made their initial call from a DSC radio before all communications were lost with the vessel.

RNLI Volunteer Charged Over Death of Grandfather in Fishing Boat RescueAn RNLI volunteer has been charged over the death of a grandfather whose fishing boat capsized during a rescue operation. The incident occurred in November 2022 near Port William harbour, Wigtownshire. Efforts were already being made to recover the stranded boat when it capsized, resulting in the death of William Murray McCubbin. A 48-year-old volunteer lifeboat crew member has been arrested and charged following a 16-month investigation.
