Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy made Sauron a lidless eye atop an ominous tower, but this was never the way Tolkien described the Dark Lord.
The Lord of the Rings movies saw Sauron as nothing but a fiery eye atop a tower, but that wasn't how J.R.R. Tolkien originally described his form in the books. The Dark Lord took on many appearances throughout his time in Middle-earth. He was sometimes beautiful and sometimes terrible, but the way he would have appeared during the Third Age has been a topic of debate.
Sauron's Physical Body Is Different In Tolkien's Books At the beginning of Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Isildur is shown cutting the One Ring from Sauron's hand. The Dark Lord then deteriorated away and was considered defeated once and for all. Of course, the truth was that as long as the One Ring existed, Sauron's essence would never be gone from Middle-earth.
Though the form Sauron took during Frodo's journey was never explicitly described further than this, it can be assumed that it was similar to that of before the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. After the downfall of Númenor, Sauron could no longer take a form that would be perceived as beautiful by men. However, The Silmarillion stated that he "wrought for himself a new guise, an image of malice & hatred made visible; and the Eye of Sauron the Terrible few could endure.
